Wolff Set to Sell Stake Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to record-breaking success in F1

Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Current Standings

Mercedes are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
